An old story, perhaps? Based A True Story by Peacock examines the current true crime craze in America. And raises concerns about the risks involved in trying to solve problems on your own.
In April 2022, the streaming service stated that it would be creating a true crime series in response to the popularity of programs. Including Only Murders in the Building, Search Party, The Flight Attendant, and Dead to Me.

The comedy-thriller Based on a True Story. Starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina is about a real estate agent, a plumber, and a former tennis pro. Who try to capitalize on America’s infatuation with crime.
In a statement released in May 2023, the project’s creator, Craig Rosenberg, revealed the source of his ideas. He said, “Over the last decade, a true crime fad has spread over America. The culture is dominated by podcasts, documentaries, and fictional productions based on genuine stories. The fact that murders have turned into celebrities. And celebrities have turned into murderers led me to make this show.
The thought of a relatable married couple who saw the potential presented by the true crime tidal wave to transform their lives and rescue their marriage interested him. He added, Our story of popularity, ambition, aspiration, and murder had its vivid backdrop in Los Angeles. The city where everyone wants to be famous.

Kaley Cuoco recounted how the project was able to incorporate her pregnancy. At the last minute before the debut of the written episode. She said to Entertainment Tonight in February 2023, “I was obviously not pregnant when I signed on for Based on a True Story. And it was written quite differently. In a meeting with the producers. I asked, “What do you think about writing this character pregnant? We’re talking literally a month or two out from shooting.”
The Big Bang Theory alum was taken aback when the detail was integrated into her character. She and her partner Tom Pelphrey had their daughter Matilda in March 2023.
“It turned out to be such a fascinating aspect of this production. At the time, she made fun of the show’s “funny, wacky, and strange” qualities. “I get to be pregnant and eat everything I want. Which is the nicest part for me. I get to dress in the coziest clothes, and I get the royal treatment from everyone. On set, I had something like 17 different chairs. This was the best way to go about it if you’re working up to the end of your third trimester like I am. They’ve really taken care of me since, as is obvious. This is the first time in my life that I’ve done something like this, and, oddly enough. I genuinely believe it’s a terrific part of the performance.

Kaley Cuoco went on to gush about the support she received from the cast and crew as she prepared for motherhood.
“I simply want to express my gratitude to this group for writing this at the last minute. I adore how this character was created so that her pregnancy didn’t significantly alter who she was. I mean it in the sense that she’s still sporting crop tops, going to the pool, having a lot of sex, and doing other crazy things.” She added. “Despite the fact that she is pregnant, we made no changes. We believed that since you are expecting, she should remain the same as she is still the same person. Actually, I feel great. Since I’ve been doing this for so long. I believe it will be interesting for people to see me as I navigate this new stage of life while being completely honest about it.
