Fans have watched The Big Bang Theory for more than 12 years as four socially awkward physicists and a street-smart blonde make friends, lose friends, fall in love, and date some pretty terrible people. Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj, the original gang, appeared set for a life of takeaway Chinese food and video games without any female company. Until Penny cautiously waltzed into their lives, that is and was able to coax each one out of their shells.
Each character eventually learned to accept who they are and pursue their goals, which led to a long string of new friendships and several romantic connections. Some pairs, however, did not receive the attention they deserved. The Big Bang Theory’s best-underappreciated relationships, according to fans, are listed below.
1. Sheldon and Penny
Although it took the two over ten years to warm up to one another, Sheldon and Penny’s friendship won over viewers. Sheldon’s initial impression of Penny was that of an uneducated slacker who stayed too long at his flat. Penny, on the other hand, thought Sheldon was a selfish genius who was incapable of compassion. Thankfully, they were both mistaken thanks to certain perspective shifts. Penny rolled her eyes with a smile as she expressed her irritation at Sheldon’s peculiar behaviors. Once she and Leonard were in a committed relationship (for the last time), she began to view Sheldon as a “practice child” who merely required explanations in words he could understand.
On the other side, Sheldon began to like Penny once he realized she was becoming a constant in his life. He would not, however, acknowledge that he considered Penny a friend until much later in the series. Penny made sure to keep Sheldon in check when it came to him having his one and only love, Amy. They quarreled like brother and sister and each had their own quick comebacks. The ideal platonic couple would be Sheldon and Penny.
2. Emily and Raj
Raj’s dates with Emily were by far the most intriguing. On the exterior, she appeared to be lovely and sweet, but she frequently spoke dark and twisted things. Raj had found the ideal companion in Emily if he desired a mysterious relationship—let’s face it, Raj was just happy to be dating a lady. She forgave him for speaking to her initially through a wingman rather than himself. Nearly all of his buddies got along with her nicely. The fact that she did not find his eccentricities—his piercings, insecurities, his love for his dog—offputting is most essential. The major flaw in Emily’s character that led many to doubt her was the fact that she openly disliked Penny. Granted, it makes sense.
According to the group, Raj and Emily’s relationship was a textbook example of a successful marriage. Although occasionally Raj’s friends didn’t even accept Raj for his peculiar personality, she accepted him for who he was. Raj ultimately found Emily to be superior to him at that point in his life.
3. Penny and Dr. Beverly Hofstadter
By the time Penny and Dr. Beverly Hofstadter parted ways, the young waitress was in tears. One’s deepest secrets and fears are easily discovered by Leonard’s mother, who then explores them for her own amusement. Everyone’s mind is like a puzzle to Beverly, and she is not one to spend time trying to figure it out.
Beverly publicly expresses her opinion that she does not think Leonard and Penny will remain together once they start dating seriously. Beverly’s viewpoint shifts as the two develop into a solid marriage in contrast to what she had anticipated. She likes Penny since Penny is always up for gossip and trash talk, and she doesn’t have any female pals. The two end up getting along well, and Beverly and Leonard are able to deepen their relationship as mother and son thanks to Penny’s encouragement of both.

4. Stuart and Denise
Nobody ever imagined Stuart, the lonely, uncomfortable, and slightly perverse owner of a comic book shop, into a relationship, much less one with a beautiful and intelligent lady. Fans anticipated that when Denise was appointed as the store’s assistant manager, she would click with one of the leading men. It was never an idea that Stuart would have the guts to ask her out, that she would accept, and that their attraction would be shared.
Denise mentions to Bernadette that her parents ran a mortuary during their talk. Stuart’s connection with Denise starts to make sense after he says that. Stuart is pushed by Denise to be more gregarious, and she even invites him to live with her. Stuart is more active with his pals now that she is in the picture, which is what he always desired, and he appears more upbeat about the future rather than unhappy and possibly suicidal.
5. Mary Cooper and Alfred Hofstadter
The “redo wedding” between Leonard and Penny caused Sheldon’s mother and Leonard’s father to get into a fight that was explosive enough to set the venue on fire. Mary Cooper had made enough appearances on the show for viewers to comprehend her personality and interests, and based on Leonard’s constant references to his parents, it appeared that Alfred was a fine man who spent much too much time married to a heartless and demeaning lady.
Mary and Alfred connect by making fun of their ex-partners right away, which causes chemistry to pulsate between the two of them. Fans cannot help but root for the unique couple, even though nothing physical happens when they leave the restaurant together for a nightcap (or so they claim). Alfred’s genial demeanor suggests that, aside from his ex-wife, he would make wonderful company for anyone. Mary has long sought a partner who would question her devoted ways. The two must follow their commitment to visit one another in the future, even if it’s simply to irritate Beverly, fans hope.
6. Stuart and Mrs. Wolowitz
Mrs. Wolowitz was a loving and compassionate mother, despite the fact that she was never seen and her voice could be heard all across the world. Stuart was taken in by Mrs. Wolowitz when he had nowhere else to go because he was homeless and his comic book store had burned down. The sight of his mother preparing food for someone else and using the same slurs she had used to refer to another guy assailed Howard to no end. Stuart, who is never shown attention, finds living with “Deb-Deb” (a pet name Howard also despises) to be very enjoyable.
The two people are a match made in heaven. Stuart wants genuine human interaction, and Mrs. Wolowitz needs someone to take care of her. Even after giving Stuart money to refurbish his comic book shop, Deb-Deb passes away before she can see the consequences of her investment. The news shocks Stuart, Howard, and the rest of the group to their core. Howard begins to appreciate the time Stuart spent with his mother as they reminisce on how much of a mother she was to them all when they needed her.

7. Stuart, Howard, and Bernadette
After Debbie Wolowitz passes away, Howard and Bernadette take up residence in her house, and Stuart finally leaves for his own flat. Due to some partially anticipated events, Stuart returns to the house to live with his buddies. Given Howard’s lethargy and Bernadette’s pregnancy, Howard sees several advantages to Stuart moving in with them. Stuart appreciates any opportunity for human contact and is skilled at household tasks. In essence, Howard considers him to be a live-in nanny. What more might a man need?
The response Bernadette would give to that query is “a husband who takes care of things.” Although Stuart contributes significantly to household tasks, Bernadette is still unsure about his role in their home. In the end, the three appear to have a fantastic system in place, but it is not without its share of quirks and problems.
8. Howard and Amy
Howard and Amy appear to be diametrically opposed from the outside. Howard is silly and enjoys making fun of his friend, and she is stern and in love with Sheldon. Amy and Howard are paired up for a Rajesh-designed scavenger adventure. A small amount of predicted awkwardness occurs when Amy says that they had never really been by themselves together. Howard and Amy first become aware of one another’s fondness for Neil Diamond after he instructs Amy to locate some music to fill the silence during their vehicle ride.
They behave throughout the hunt like old buddies grooving out while driving and singing loudly. The two are thrilled to attend a Neil Diamond concert that is scheduled for next month when they should be searching for a hint at the lab. The two do not reach the last site by the end of the scavenger hunt; instead, they visit the Cheesecake Factory to sing karaoke. Although their friendship was brief, it had a lasting effect that left people wanting more.
